This weekend, the San Diego International Film Festival continues. The opera La Traviata will be performed at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. Friday (today), at the Joan B. Kroc Performing Arts Center, there will be a Melle & Hulu Concert. At Coffee Hub and Cafe, authors Nancy Jooyoun Kim and Jean Kwok will talk about their latest works. Xanadu will open at the Coronado Playhouse. Los Cuates de Sinaloa will perform at the Blue Agave Nightclub. Saturday and Sunday, the annual Bella Vita Fest will be a celebration of Italian culture through sidewalk chalk art. Saturday, there is an Ikebana Japanese Flower Arranging Exhibition at La Jolla Riford Library. The Chinese Historical Society and Museum will host an online talk on the Zodiac Heads from the Garden of Perfect Brightness. The House of Scotland will hold their annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages. At the Kearny Mesa Recreation Center, a 2nd Annual Gaelic Games & Irish Picnic will take place. At Westfield Plaza Bonita, there will be a Día de Los Muertos Celebration. The Worldbeat Center will host its 2nd annual Taste of Africa. At Fashion Valley, there will be a Day of the Dead Mexico Gourmet Festival. At Marina Village, there will be a Traditional Mexican Medicine Workshop. At the San Diego Craft Collective, there will be a Kintsugi Workshop, a Japanese art aesthetic based on embracing imperfection. CRY San Diego will hold its annual Dandiya Celebration at the California Center for the Arts. An AfroHeat Fiesta will happen at the Encore Event Center. The inspiring Sharon Katz & The Peace Train will perform at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Carlsbad. Sunday, the Oceanside Dia de los Muertos celebration will take place. At the Maraya Performing Arts Studio in Chula Vista, there will be a Filipino Arts & Culture Summit (and Blood Drive!). German Currents KINO will screen the film Mission Ulja Funk. Later that day, they will screen The Ordinaries. The Soap Factory will present a Lucha Libre Mexican Wrestling event. At La Vie Dance Studios, there will be a participatory Brazilian Music event for young and old. The fusion of Caribbean music and Afrobeats vibes Socafro Carnival will take place at Mr. Temp on Sixth Ave. The 2023-24 JPlays season kicks off with Lillian Hellman’s play Watch on the Rhine. Mexican star Lila Downs will perform at the Balboa Theater. At Normal Heights Community Center, there will be another Flamenco Music and Dance Event. At the San Diego Made Factory, there will be a Music For Maui with The Filharmonic fundraising concert. Hasta la Muerte at the California Center for the Arts is a multi-dimensional performance with music, dance, theatre, and folklore. The Digital Gym will screen the film Orphea in Love. Christian Nodal will perform at the Pechanga Arena. Monday, a Border Angels Fundraiser will take place at the Mingei. Le Poème Harmonique: Music For a Young King there will be an ensemble performance of traditional French chansons, as well as music by Moulinié, de Lalande, and Charpentier, and excerpts from the first operas by Lully and Cavalli performed in France. Tuesday, there will be a Presentation on the Filipino Medicinal Plant, Malunggay at UCSC. Face to Face with Wu Man will be a talk with the pipa virtuoso followed by a performance. The film Imelda will be shown at the North University Library. Yale Strom and Hot Pstromi will perform klezmer music at UC San Diego Park & Market. Wednesday, at the Rancho Peñasquitos Library there will be an Introduction to South Indian Classical Music given by vocalist Devesh Vashishtha. The Persian Music and Spiritual Health event at UCSD will feature a performance by Grammy Award-winning artist Sahba Motallebi and multi-Grammy Award-winning percussionist T.J. Troy. The all-female Sabrosas Latin Orchestra will perform at the Belly Up. Next Thursday, there will be a talk by Dr. Maria Danilychev, MD on the Traditional Japanese Healing Art of Reiki. Next Friday, Irish Music on the Commons, will feature Ben Jaber and Pete Polansky. At the California Center for the Arts, Art & Spirit: Día de los Muertos will be an evening of art, music, and remembrance. World Fair Gone Digital will be a presentation on the Turin 1911 Project. Banda Magda will perform at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. At the International Cottages, In Scena Italian Theater Festival will be a screening of two films My Idea, Joe Zangara’s Memory, and The Tightrope Walkers. At the Persian Cultural Center, Golden Time will be shown with a discussion after the film. The Azúcar Band will perform at the California Center for the Arts. The Hunchback of Notre Dame will open at the California Center for the Arts. There will be a Carnatic Vocal Concert at the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living. Mexikolombia will perform at Boulevard Hall. Manuel Turizo will perform at the San Diego Civic Theater. And the Argentine duo Pimpinela will perform at the Magnolia Performing Arts Center in El Cajon.
Next Saturday and Sunday, the Old Town Día de Los Muertos celebration will take place. At the Chinese History Museum's Chuang Garden, there will be two performances of Asian Scary Theater on both Saturday and Sunday. Next Saturday, there will be Día de Los Muertos celebrations at City Heights, Greenwood Memorial Park, and Chula Vista Memorial Park. There will be a Capoeira Batizado at the WorldBeat Center. The Two Gentlemen of Verona will open at the Old Globe. There will be a book talk on Maria Ressa's How to Stand Up to a Dictator. The film Alborz: We Climb Mountains will be shown at UCSD. The film version of Faust will be shown at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Spring Valley. Samahan will present An Evening of Rondalla and Kulintang Music at the Mingei. There will be a Fireboat Festival at Wat Lao Buddharam. La Lucha Libre Mexicana will take place at Montgomery-Waller Recreation Center. There will be an outdoor screen of the delightful film Coco. Next Sunday, there will be Dia de los Muertos celebrations at the Old Globe, Encinitas, Barrio Logan, and Poway. The House of Türkiye will hold their annual Lawn Program with speakers, live music, with the San Diego Turkish Music Chorus, dance, arts and crafts, food and more. There will be a Bijaya Dashami Celebration at the Royal India. Akkarai Sisters vocal duo will perform Carnatic music at Seaside Center for Spiritual Living. Comedian Monique Marvez will be at Mic Drop Comedy. Puerto Rican reggae band Cultura Profetica will perform at The Sound.
Local theatrical productions include Sumo at the La Jolla Playhouse and Xanadu at the Coronado Playhouse, The Hunchback of Notre Dame at the California Center for the Arts and The Two Gentlemen of Verona at the Old Globe both open next weekend.
